1996 photograph of Walter Allan Hepworth's OSC1935 grave at the Ambon Australia War Cemetery, Indonesia. The photograph depict the site of Walter's tomb stone a Flying Officer in the Royal Australian Air Force [officer #406851] who passed away killed in action on the 9th of July 1943. The tomb states “His duty Fearlessly and Nobly done ever remembered”.
"The Ambon cemetery covers area of almost ten acres and is situated on ground rising to three terraces overlooking the wide expanse of Ambon Bay. The cemetery is entered through tall bronze gates and along lawned pathway which leads to the Memorial Building. In the centre of that building is a centopath. On the walls are recorded in everlasting bronze the names of those who died in Celebes, the Moluccas and Timor, and have no known grave....All graves remarked by Bronze memorial Plaques in the form of headstones, which are et in the semi-recumbent position on each grave.
The graves unknown are 376 in number, etching bearing the words "A soldier of the Second War known unto God".
The building materials are of Australian origin and have been shipped to Ambon in such a form that a minimum of local skill was required to complete the task of erection. All construction work at the Cemetery was carried out under the strict supervision of the Commission's staff".
Walter and his younger brother Raymond Eric Hepworth OSC1944 attended Scotch College.
The photograph was donated in June 2019 by Vicki Weston, daughter of Raymond Eric Hepworth OSC1944 and niece to Walter Allan Hepworth OSC1935.
