ROWING [taken from the 1938 Scotch College Reporter]
The innovation of eights led to an increased interest in the Boatshed this year, and that we were able to boat a third crew of such ability after seating a first eight and second four shows that the material is available if the boys wi1 only show the necessary interest.
ROWING [taken from the 1938 Scotch College Reporter]
Early in first term tbe Captain and Vice-Captain of Boats were elected, the positions being filled by D. Barratt Hill and D. C Stewart. Hill had had previous experience, but no other rower had returned for 1938. The practice four was used for some weeks to teach the boys to row and after four weeks
they were sufficiently advanced to use the practice eight. However it was not until two weeks before Easter that a final selection was made; and even then some time before the crew began to show any real form.
Hard work over Easter inproved the crew considerably and before the time of the race some good times had been recorded. In the race all rowed well and are to be congratulated on a magnificent. The seats were filled as follows : as follows: K. P. Properjohn (10.0), (bow), K. R. Vale (10.9) (two), R. S. Thompson (10.12) (three), G. L. Kilpatrick (11.6) (four), W. 0. Gaze (10.12) (five), G. P. Pritchard (10.12) (six), D. C Stewart (11.8) (seven), D. Barratt Hill (10.6) (stroke), R. A Barter (cox).
The second crew was chosen late, as in the case of the first crew, and Mr Goland. Goland was unable to give very much attention. However, they shaped well and were unfortunate to strike such heavy conditions in the race. The positions were as follows: Smith A. M. (9.0) (bow), Forter (11.0) (Two), Shaddick B. P. (10.8) (three), Richardson J. A. (9.10) (stroke), Bowman J. V. (cox).
The third crew were outstanding as such and thoroughly deserved their win. Seating was as follows: Michelides (bow), Carter (two), McCracken (three), Maiklem (stroke), George (cox). Mr Goland, once again devoted almost all his time to the rowing, and with his assistant, Mr Powell, is to be congratulated on the manner in which they repaired the practice eight. We cannot sufficiently thank Mr Goland for his work. We also wish to thank two old boys, G. Barratt Hill and A. F. McGuire, for the assistance they gave to Mr Goland; the University Boat Club for the use of their shed and especially those whose generosity made possible the purchase of the new eight. We are pleased to be able to say that Mr Goland seems fully recovered from his illness and trust that he will not be effected again" 1938 Scotch College Reporter.
The following 1930's photographs and memorabilia were donated by Jill Griffiths in June 2020. The images belonged to her father Mr David Castairs Stewart OSC1938.
