SECONDARY SCHOOLS’ ANNUAL CHAMPIONSHIPS
A large company of enthusiasts made their way to the new Crawley Baths on Saturday morning to witness the annual swimming contest between representatives of the High School, the Christian Brothers’ College, Scotch College, and the Church of England Grammar school. A departure from custom was made this year, in that three races were held instead of one. These were two open events, 100 yards and 220 yards, and one under 15 years’ event of 100 yards. Five, three, and two points were given for the first, second, and third places respectively in the open events, and three, two and one in the under-age race. Each of the schools were hopeful of getting good places, and rumours of ‘dark horses’ were numerous. The honours of the day went to Scotch College, who obtained 22 points out of a possible 26. Details of the races are appended:
100 Yards Open Event: McNeil (Scotch College), 5 points 1st; Maitland (High School), 3 points, 2nd; Clowes (Scotch College), 2 points, 3rd. Though left at the start by reason of a misfire, McNeil swam strongly through the field and won easily, with Maitland a good second. Time, 1 minute, 4.4 seconds.
100 Yards under 15 Event: Watson (Scotch College), 3 points, 1st; Maxwell (Scotch College), 2 points, 2nd; Low (Christian Brothers' College), 1 point, 3rd. Watson led throughout, and won by yards. Time, 1 minute 11.2 seconds.
220 Yards Open Event. McNeil (Scotch College), 5 points, 1st; Jones (Scotch College), 3 points, 2nd; Watson (Scotch College), 2 points, 3rd. The Scotch College boys got together from the start, and swam a splendid team race. Maitland (High School) swam very pluckily, and was only just beaten into fourth place. Time, 2 minutes, 47seconds.
Aggregate Points: Scotch College, 22; High School, 3; Christian Brothers' College, 1. The thanks of the Secondary Schools’ Association are due to Mr. P. R. Le Couteur, Sergeant Smith. and Mr. J. Crawcour for their kindness in acting as judge, starter, and timekeeper respectively at the meeting.
