A photographs of Murray (Sherbourne) Sheppard OSC1925 in 1942. The photograph was digitally donated 2019 by his daughter Laurelei Moore. The photograph depicts Murray pictured in his World war Two RAAF uniform, most probably taken in Victoria while on leave.
Laurelei states that her father "Sherbourne Murray Sheppard was born 1908, in a lighthouse off Darwin to an Australian father and British South African mother. Older brother, Melville OSC1924 and two younger sisters Wilga and Win.
He grew up on rubber plantations in the Dutch East Indies (East Java), speaking Dutch and Indonesian, as well as English. When he came to Scotch College as a boarder with his older brother, he got called “Dutchie”.
He told us how he heard the tigers roaring in the jungle across the river". During his time in Java.
"He was very athletic and excelled in shooting and football, also doing well academically.
...He met our mother Joyce Lee-Archer working in Melbourne at National Bank Head Office, in the Accounts and Photography Department.
Melville Sheppard OSC1924 went on to become a prominent surgeon in England, and had a Hospital wing named after him in Essex.
During the Second World War, he was in the RAAF and travelled on the Queen Mary from New York to London, dodging the U boats. He was a reconnaissance photographer on the bombing raids over Europe.
He married our mother Joyce Lee-Archer in 1942 and settled in Melbourne after the War. We have an older brother Leigh, born in 1946 and we Laurelei and Gaye (daughters of Murray) were born in 1950. He remained in the Bank, where he was their official photographer for all the branches in Victoria. He also won many photographic awards in the community too.
He died in 1986 and was survived by fourteen grandchildren and 26 great grandchildren – but none live in Perth!!" Laurelei Moore 2019
